Not true at all. One of the hottest trends in the historic wine-making country is the rise of dry, hearty reds. They offer some of the best values on the wine market today. This sumptuous, spicy blend from famous producer, Esporao, is made with the same native grapes that go into Port Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional but is dry and delicious.

Live Stream information currently unavailable. KQED food. Previous Radio. Support KQED. About KQED. I could not find the front desk. Staff at the restaurant on the ground floor directed me upstairs but I saw nothing. Back out to the car, popped onto their free wi-fi to look up the number and call. Got voicemail. Now at this point my tired was winning the battle with my love of adventure, but Adventure rallied and I marched back upstairs and on a whim knocked on the closed and locked dutch door Irene appeared and checked me in. And when the parking lot across the street was full, she hopped in and showed me an alternate, secure spot.
We had an enjoyable chat, she bid me goodnight, and I went up to check out the room. I stayed in the Annex. Really nice small room! Very comfortable and well-decorated. LOVED the bathroom. Great towels and toiletries. Best hotel robes I have ever used, and I have stayed in some swanky places. Very comfortable bed. Windows that open. Could not havebeen more comfortable. Here's what you also might not like: no fridge, microwave, coffee-maker. Across the street is a working set of train tracks, so through the evening but not overnight I heard the bells from the crossing, the squeal of the wheels on the tracks, and the soft rumblings of freight moving and shaking the building.
I loved it. And with plenty of coffee, deli, corner store, pub, restaurant choices all within a few minutes walk in a pleasant neighborhood, who needs all that in-room stuff? For me the only way it could be better is if they took dogs, but so it goes.

You'd never know that this beautiful little community is tucked in here. My husband is third mate on a ship that ports in Richmond, and we stay at Hotel Mac every time I come out to visit about nights each year. The management is very friendly, and the rooms are simply charming. My only warning is that the Carriage House has very thin walls. There is frequently loud music coming from the restaurant next door, and the trains run right next to it in the middle of the night.
If you can't stay in the main building, I suggest the Annex, which is a bit better insulated. I stay at this hotel once a year for an annual sailing get together. It is extremely clean and comfy.

Each room has a different motif and some have fireplaces. The hotel is above a restaurant and bar, which offers excellent food. I love small inns such as this. Cozy and casual. The hotel staff are always charming and full of stories. There are other restaurants within walking distance for all three meals too. I stayed at The Mac three nights during the holidays. As a hundred-plus year old hotel that's been refurbished, I was prepared to find it tolerable,period--having chosen it strictly for the convenience factor about a six minute car trip from my daughter's home. Instead, I liked it very much.

The room was incredibly clean with a large closet and huge bathroom. The room was well lit and had two sitting chairs in it so my daughter and I could comfortably sit and converse when she drove me "home" each evening. It's a no nonsense place with few amenities yes, free Wi-Fi --a safe, fridge and TV being about the extent of them. It's fully equipped in terms of hair dryer, iron, etc. It feels more like a furnished apartment rental than a hotel. Check-in time is limited you go to the resident manager's apartment with special arrangements needing to be made if after 7 pm.
I found this endearing, not annoying. The Mac reminded me of modest hotels I've stayed in in Rome and Paris--but cleaner. Fantastic shower, with plenty of cushy towels and ample grab bars, a plus for me, an old woman, that I rarely find in modern hotels.

I stayed in the Highcliff room, one of the least expensive because it has no fireplace and is not a suite. But I will happily stay there any time the occasion presents itself. Oh, and the bed was superbly comfortable. Flights Holiday Rentals Restaurants Things to do. Tip: All of your saved places can be found here in My Trips.
